Dr. Carlos began piano lessons at seven years of age at Mayfair Academy, located on
Chicago’s south side. While a student at Kenwood Academy High School, she accompanied numerous students for instrumental competitions and accompanied the school chorus.
Dr. Carlos continued studying piano while a student at Chicago State University, where she received her B.A. in secondary music education. She received her M.M.E. degree from Illinois State University and her Ed.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During her studies, she was the recipient of a Spencer Foundation research grant in which she studied grant writing and other research topics at University of California at Los Angeles. Her dissertation is entitled, “We Need a Bigger Harvest: The Case for Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in General Music Education.
Dr. Carlos has taught music education atWesternIllinoisUniversity, at Chicago State University as an instructor of music, and adult music classes atKennedy-KingCollegefor the Continuing Education department.
As an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Western Illinois University in Macomb,Illinois, Dr. Carlos received a research grant to explore culturally diverse students and how teachers instruct them. She presented her dissertation findings to the International Symposium of Music Education (ISME) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She has also presented at the American Educational Research Association (AERA), an organization with over 15,000 major research contributors in disciplines such as education, sociology and psychology.
